SUGGESTION THERAPY (CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY)
Suggestion therapy forms the basis of many hypnotic techniques.
Suggestions can be used to help create the belief that you are calm and relaxed, a brilliant driver or an incredibly focussed athlete.
Unfortunately most people's first introduction to hypnotic suggestion is by watching a stage hypnotist.
I have to draw a distinction between a hypnotist and a hypnotherapist.
A "Hypnotist" uses their skill for the purposes of public entertainment.
A "Hypnotherapist" uses their skill for the wellbeing of their patient or client to help bring about a change in that persons thought processes or belief system.
Many people worry that they will be made to perform silly tasks when hypnotised or that they may not look into my eyes.
I can tell you quite categorically that it is very safe to look into my eyes and that I have no interest in the use of hypnosis for amusement.
People often ask me how they will be hypnotised.
I use a very gentle and progressive technique, starting with your eyes closed I just ask you to become aware of the feelings you have in different parts of your body and also to visualise really nice relaxing situations. The process of helping you to achieve a really relaxed state takes around 10 - 15 minutes.
Only when you are fully relaxed will the suggestion therapy begin.
I am also asked, what does it feel like to be hypnotised?
In all honesty, there is no such thing as a hypnotised feeling. Different people experience different sensations and none of them really mean you are hypnotised.
Some people experience heaviness, some lightness or floating. Some find that all their senses become enhanced, their sense of smell, touch, hearing and taste become fine tuned during hypnosis.
I find that the best explanation of the type of hypnosis I use is that you feel fully relaxed, aware of your surroundings and that if you wanted you could stand up and walk out of the room whenever you wanted but that you are so relaxed you would quite simply prefer to remain seated and listen to me talk.
Occasionally people tell me that others have tried and failed to hypnotise them, that they are just too strong willed.
My answer to this is that if you have called me for a session and travelled to my office for hypnotherapy then you are using the strength off your will to make a change in your life. Because you are so strong willed then your determination to succeed is much higher than the average person and as such you can use your will to ensure that you relax deeply and that you get the most from your session with me.
Some people are slightly more difficult to take to a relaxed state than others, but this is usually a trust or control issue. It does not mean that you cannot be hypnotised, on the contrary. It just means that I would not really recomend suggestion therapy and would ask you to question your issues with trust and to consider going through a course of "Pure Hypnoanalysis".
